As of July 2008, Kongregate had raised around $9 million in capital from investments by Reid Hoffman, Jeff Clavier, Jeff Bezos, Greylock Partners. On July 23, 2010, GameStop announced an agreement to acquire Kongregate; because of Gamestop's purchase of Kongregate, developers who work through Kongregate can have their content promoted to people who shop at a GameStop store. Kongregate provides a way for creators of games on Facebook to expand their potential audience. In early 2013, Kongregate announced a $10 million fund devoted to mobile gaming; the new mobile division is led by former Zynga executive Pany Haritatos. In 2014, the site introduced Kongpanions, acting as a trophy system and metagame in the form of small creatures, whether animals or personified objects; the Kongpanions that players collect can be used in some games on the site. Kongregate announced plans in October 2016 to help developers bring their games to the Steam distribution platform with an updated software development kit to make it easy to port games between their web and the Steam platforms, to support data sharing between these for players.
This enabled games to take advantage of microtransactions through the Steam store for titles otherwise free-to-play. In 2016, Kongregate received Apple Editors' Choice for BattleHand and The Trail, received Google Play Editors' Choice for Animation Throwdown and AdVenture Capitalist. BattleHand and The Trail were voted as Best of 2016 by Apple, Animation Throwdown and The Trail were voted Best of 2016 by Google Play. On June 20, 2017, Kongregate announced it had closed a deal to be acquired by Swedish entertainment company Modern Times Group for $55 million; this follows MTG's recent purchase of 51% of Hamburg-based online game developer InnoGames in 2016 and 2017. Planned as part of the deal is a change in focus from hosting third-party games to driving game development as well. 'we’ll be deepening our investment in several areas, from marketing/marketing tech to platform engineering. We’re going to be investing in first-party development and potential acquisitions of our own within the games space,' said CEO Emily Greer.
On October 5, 2017, Kongregate acquired Chicago-based Synapse Games, the developer of Animation Throwdown. On May 2, 2019, Kongregate announced that CEO Emily Greer was leaving the company, she was replaced by COO Pany Haritatos as interim CEO. In November 2018 Kongregate opened a digital storefront focusing on independent games; the storefront is available via browser or desktop app and features both premium paid games and free browser based titles. Unlike other storefronts such as Steam, Kartridge is a curated store. Kongregate hopes this curation will help spotlight quality games and address discoverability issues indie games face. Kongregate users can receive rewards for installing Kartridge. Kongregate has released 25 games for mobile devices that are available on the Google Play Store and the App Store, their most downloaded apps include AdVenture Capitalist, Pocket Politics, Star Trek Trexels. A ballot box is a temporarily sealed container a square box though sometimes a tamper resistant bag, with a narrow slot in the top sufficient to accept a ballot paper in an election but which prevents anyone from accessing the votes cast until the close of the voting period. It will be located in a polling station although in some countries, notably Ireland and Russia, there may be ballot boxes that are taken to people's homes where they would otherwise be unable to travel to the polling station; when large ballot papers are used, there may be a feeder mechanism to assist in the deposit of the paper into the box. Transparent ballot boxes may be used in order for people to be able to witness that the box is empty prior to the start of the election. At the close of the election all boxes can be taken to a single location for tallying and the result declared. Alternately the boxes can be tallied at the polling station, with individual stations announcing their results to be tallied. Ballot boxes are obsolete in some jurisdictions because of the increase in paperless electronic voting.
The word ballot derives from voting systems based upon the use of a small ball instead of a voting paper: see blackball. In the Roman Republic, each voter gave his vote orally to an official who made a note of it on an official tablet, but in the Republic, the secret ballot was introduced, the voter recorded his vote with a stylus on a wax-covered boxwood tablet dropped the completed ballot in the sitella or urna, sometimes called cista; the first British secret ballot using ballot papers and a ballot box was held in Pontefract on 15 August 1872, under the terms of the enacted Ballot Act 1872. In a ministerial by-election following his appointment as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Hugh Childers was re-elected as MP for Pontefract; the original ballot box, sealed in wax with a liquorice stamp, is held at Pontefract Museum. The skimmers, forming the genus Rynchops, are tern-like birds in the family Laridae. The genus comprises three species found in South Asia and the Americas, they were known as the scissorbills. The three species are the only birds with distinctive uneven bills, where the lower mandible is longer than the upper; this remarkable adaptation allows them to fish in a unique way, flying fast over streams. Their lower mandible skims or slices over the water's surface, ready to snap shut any small fish unable to dart clear; the skimmers are sometimes included within the gull family Laridae but separated in other treatments which consider them as a sister group of the terns. The black skimmer has an additional adaptation and is the only species of bird known to have slit-shaped pupils, their bills fall within their field of binocular vision, which enables them to position their bill and capture prey. They gather in large flocks along rivers and coastal sand banks, they are subtropical species which lay 3 -- 6 eggs on sandy beaches.
The female incubates the eggs. Because of the species' restricted nesting habitat the three species are vulnerable to disturbance at their nesting sites. One species, the Indian skimmer, is considered vulnerable by the IUCN due to this as well as destruction and degradation of the lakes and rivers it uses for feeding; as in editions of the works of Linnaeus, the correct spelling should be rhynchops and this is adopted. However, the misspelling rynchops was the one first published by Linnaeus and continues to be more used; the gender of the Greek and Roman words is feminine and the genus was treated as such but Rynchops is now treated as a masculine noun.
